Daybreak is a new AI-powered cybersecurity initiative announced by OpenAI to help organisations discover software vulnerabilities and improve cyber defences before attacks take place. The launch positions Daybreak as the company’s direct counter to Anthropic’s controversial Claude Mythos programme, which recently attracted global attention for its advanced hacking and vulnerability-discovery capabilities.
Reports suggest that Daybreak uses OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 models, along with its Codex Security agent, to analyse codebases, model possible attack paths, verify vulnerabilities in isolated environments, and propose fixes for human review. OpenAI says the system aims to build cybersecurity into software development itself rather than using quick fixes after a breach occurs.
The announcement comes just weeks after Anthropic unveiled Claude Mythos as part of its “Project Glasswing” initiative. Mythos reportedly demonstrated the ability to uncover critical vulnerabilities in major operating systems and browsers, prompting concerns over the dual-use risks of highly capable AI systems.
OpenAI says Daybreak will use a tiered access system, so only verified security researchers and corporate defenders get the more advanced cybersecurity features. They’re also teaming up with big names in the industry - Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, and Okta - to roll Daybreak out across enterprise networks.
Analysts see this launch as another big move in the AI cybersecurity race, where major players keep pushing out new tools that can protect software - or leverage its flaws.
